I have a 1999 CLK200 auto and have just ordered a dipstick for checking the fluid on the auto transmission..My questions are....

Do I check it when it is hot or cold? and in neutral or in park?

Cheers all.....

Please click user cp and add your vehicle and location to your profile as it is often useful information.

First things first: This is not a dipstick in the conventional system. It's a tool designed to measure the level, you use it and remove it.

There are two ranges on the stick tool, one for cold fill (25c) after a service and the other (80c) for setting the final level. Park on level ground, fluid temp at 80c, your target is the middle of the range, which spans only 10mm on the stick.

Absent a leak or a fill after service, there is no need to check it regularly. You'll use the tool, then replace the cap and a new locking pin if you wish.

You may wish to head over to the 210 forum and read the 722.6xx FAQ page for lots of information about your transmission.

1. Engine running trans in park fluid at 80c for final level check.

2. At least some years of the 202, 203, 208, 209, 210, 211, 140, 220, 170, 171 and 163 all use the 722.6xx transmission. I think I'm also probably omitting a model or two. The 210 forum FAQ on the 722.6xx has the most comprehensive collection of information in a single post, which is why I reference it.
