Hello, just two weeks ago I purchased a 2011 ML350 and the blind spot indicator is not able to turn on or off with the + and - keys.
First off I tried resetting it and read the relevant manual at least three to four times over the course of three days. It just wont allow me to turn it off. On Saturday I washed out the underside bumper very well and tried to get at either one of the two rear bumper sensors to no avail without dropping the underside of the rear bumper panel...decided to stop due to the many one way/ one time snap-in clips.
I hear each sensor part only is approx. $700 CDN and they like replacing them in pairs including the bridal harness for another $200. then labour on top of this.....
Looking for help and recommended fix or solution.

I'm not familiar with your car; but blind spot assist in the W221 requires that "radar sensor system" features be activated. All of the "radar sensor system" associated features (including BAS Plus, Pre-Safe brake, Distronic plus and Blind Spot Assist) can be turned off with one selection (and indeed, any car traveling into Canada and not registered there is required to do just that). The selection is in the "Settings" menu in the W221. I would check that before proceeding further.
Thanks, with this vehicle you are suppose to turn it off and on with either the + or - indication, but to no avail will it turn on and off. I have read the manual followed the item specific instructions ever so closely and the +/- keys do not disengage the feature.
it looks like I have to take it in and learn the hard cash way.
Again, Thanks for sharing and for your reply.

Not sure I follow which feature won't turn on or off; I know that (if things work the same as the W221) you turn blind spot assist on or off the way you describe. My suggestion is that perhaps the "radar sensor system" may have become disabled and needs to be turned back on. It must be on to allow you to activate blind spot assist in the way you describe.
I have the same MB with blind spot sensor option, during the winter my windshield wipers stop working, i took it to a mechanic who said that the blind spot sensors shorted out the windshield wipers, he has replaced over 40 some had shorted out the whole computer systems in MB's. The sensors are located in the back bumper with no protection from the weather elements and mine were corroded by the water. They are hooked up to the computer system which in turn gets shorted from the corroded sensors. This should have been a recall from MB because it is a major issue. I had them removed because I'm not replacing them to have the same problems. We should complain to MB due to the poor design of the Blind Sport Sensor option corrected.
It seems this blind spot issue is quite common and a recall would be the coreect answer to the problem.
In my case it seems to interfere also with the indicator. It stops working while driving. Once I stop and switch the engine off/on it works again. Mercedes service suggests to change radar unit . Quote around 2500.00 CAD. Sounds ridiculous for the repair of an inherent problem.
Disgusted with my E350 blue tec. I lost my distronic sensor function , took it to the dealer, and was told it was corroded, and water must have gotten in.
This is a sealed system, and as far as I know this car should be capable of driving in the rain and be washed. The
extended warranty won't cover it, as they say they don't cover water damage.S o I seem to be stuck with a $2200. bill.
It looks like this is a major design and system failure problem that Mercedes should cover. Any help would be appreciated.
Disgusting as your situation is, it would seem that there is little help we could offer. Your Distronic module doesn't work, and your (3rd party?) extended warranty won't cover it. Not much we can do.
If your car isn't very far out of warranty (you should give us the model year, via the User CP button at the top of the page), and if you are in the US (please give us at least the continent you live on) you could elevate to the regional managers where you live and possibly get customer assistance, where MB covers part of the cost. If too far out of warranty, or outside the US, they may not help.
I have this problem too
My CLA 200 is only 1 week old and it alert me on blind spot sensor incoporative
They are changing the whole set for me hope it don't come back again
so angry
luvsunset, thank you for savings me $2000. The diagnosis in your post was 100% correct. I run into the same problem. First my blind spot inoperative messages came on however for a while I was able to disable it using the menu. Then during a snow storm the blind spot inoperative message showed up again and my wipers stop working so I knew there was a relation between the 2. This time i couldn't even turn off the blinds spot feature as the system didn't allow it. I took your advice and opened the rear bumper and sure enough one of the sensors was cracked open.
Here is the issues. When the sensor is compromised it create a short circuit which causes a 5 Amp fuse to fail. The same fuse located in (60) also used for front wiper relay switch.
Solution: replace or remove the faculty sensor and replace the blown fuse.
If you opted to not install the new sensor just wrop the sockets with some tape.

Hey so where is the fuse located exactly.
I know there are 3 fuse boxes in the ml350 2011... this fuse you talking about is it locate in the back fuse box ?
i have sme issue with my ml 350 2015 model, my shows blind spot assist inoperative. took it to the mechanic and he said its the blind sport is working fine but cant turn off or on. they have looked for the fault and yet the can't find it. pls i need an answer or solution.
Hi every one , first of all i am glad to join this form , secondly i got this blind spit issue with my Mercedes S400 , 2015 . My question is the following: i have seen many blind spot sensors at Ebay and Amazon , is it ok to purchase those & they can be installed at my car , or it should have the same serial#
If there was a SN, it would be unique to a part and you could not purchase another one with the same serial. If the part number was the same, it would fit your car but there is a chance that the part has been updated and a part with another part number would be better for you.
It is always best to check the correct part from EPC with the car VIN number. You would find the current spare part number and also parts that are compatible but have been replaced with the current one. Helps with parts on sale at eBay etc.
Thank you sir so much for your informative reply. I did search with the same serial # and all #s are matching the ones that i had in my car. I will go to purchase them . I will post the results once they are installed.
Thanks again for yor kind reply
