I recently bought a 2007 SL550 and now I'm looking for ways of integrating an iPod, Zune, or any MP3 player with its audio system. Third-party components seem to involve (moderately) serious installation, which I find a bit disruptive. So, I've started by looking at solutions like FM adapters first.
Another possibility has just come to my attention today: audio via Bluetooth. (I'm not talking about a phone connection in any way. This is purely for listening to music.) I've seen a Bluetooth adaptor for the iPod by Rocketfish. So, my question is, does anyone here know anything about the possibility of using Bluetooth in these cars (or any similar model) for audio? Is stereo audio supported? Outright impossible? Is Bluetooth purely for phone use? Only works on some models? Has anyone here ever tried this before?
In case anyone might ask "why bother with Bluetooth instead of an FM adapter?", it's because an FM adapter is an analog connection, whereas Bluetooth is digital. So, I'm expecting it to have much better audio quality, or at least be free of static or signal strength issues. (Being digital, it should be that "if it's connected, it's connected".)
My model provides Bluetooth functionality only through the adapter plugged into the armrest. So, if anyone has experience or information for this particular Bluetooth solution, I'd appreciate it even more.
