Game over for the Navi-DVD

I just read on a German news page from the German news TV channel n-TV that MB wants to change its navigation and infotainment products completely away from DVD basis.

They call the system "myCommand" and will work completely online. Maps will be downloaded from Google with current gas prices and other informing data.

Even the CD/DVD changer will be gone in the future. Music and video will be blasting from the Internet as well. The reason for that change is according to the article because the development cycles of the music and entertainment industry are to short to keep up.

The phone system will be Voice over IP (VoIP). myCommand will have an Internet browser embedded to surf the web.

They claim that the system is far developed and could be ready for the marked on a short period of time but this of course makes only sense once the wireless capacities are fast enough and available everywhere which they claim will not be before 2015.
