Complicated???
I have been having quite a few problems with my sound system in my W220 S500. The cd changer decides to not work and then the head unit stammers with sound-sometimes playin fine, othertimes silent.
I would rate my self 6/10 when it comes to taking things apart and re-assembling them.
Now for the question: Should I just let the stealership deal with the problems and pay for it, or should I have a go on repairing it myself. On the one hand, the car seems very complicated and stressfull, but I can't help but think, if I read around, have help from other forum users and stick at it, I can reach the same solution WITHOUT spending hundreds at the stealership.
So... What will it be?
To repair or not repair! That is the question
That sounds like a loose fiber optic connection. Check the fiber optic leads at each component - start with those in the trunk The phone bulletins on Paul Dick's site give good information for U.S. specification cars, and you may be able to figure your U.K. version out from those (e.g., I know your steering wheel is on the right, but I don't know if the trunk - or boot - components are reversed). Phone Bulletins
If that doesn't work, it's time to see the dealer. A similar thing happened to me in my '00 S500 - the COMAND unit needed a firmware update (not the same as a navigation update).

Firmware update? Is this expensive? And can this ONLY be done by mercedes dealer?
Oh, and thank you Skylaw, your knowledge on these cars seems to be better than the dealers!

The firmware upgrade can be, and I believe should be, done free of charge or at most for the cost of the CD (~$40US). I bought the CD a few years ago, but it didn't work on my MY'00 because it was for MY'01. I can't tell what year your car is but if it's an '01 here's what you may need...

Jayhawk, don't you have a US Comand in your car? The service disk mentions ECE (Europe) for the target device. Usually at least both USA and ECE are mentioned if the disk is common for both markets (in some cases they are common, in some cases US has a specific disk).

Did you find a W-part number from the disk?
Interesting question... I got the CD from my dealer Parts Department so I assume it is for my US COMAND. The part # is W 230 589 00 22 00.
