Have code, but can't enter it?

Hi- I have my code, but can't seem to enter it... instead of "CODE" or "WAIT" it shows this on the display " -- -- -- -- " I am not sure if my husband tried reentering a code after he reconnected the battery when he was doing work on the car. Any help is greatly appreciated....thanks!

After you connect the power to the radio, it will flash " CODE ", enter your code "XXXXX" (5 digit, it will not show the code the radio screen), as soon as you enter the correct code hit "SC" (scan) button on the radio, the code will accept. This procedure will apply on 1999 & up. I do not know for sure, what to apply for the older model. Good luck.

I have not seen a head unit that would not show the input for code entry, perhaps there are some. But this case is not about the code, the radio does not start properly. You should find advice by search for the "four dashes on the screen" symptom.
