I work for mercedes and i have noticed the difference as well i think its all to do with the difference in the cabin size. I have heard the bose system in a clk and its better in that than the harmon kardon system so i think it all comes down to the size of the car and setup.
I have the Bose sound system in my 2002 SLK320, 2004 SL500, and my 1999 Yukon Denial. The Bose sound system is awesome in my 1999 Yukon Denali. It sucks in both my Mercedes. However, the sound is great when I play tapes in my 2002 SLK320. It is like listening to music from high quality theater speakers in your home. I do not understand why I do not get great sound out of the CD player and radio in my 2002 SLK320. The Mercedes demo tape that you get with the SLK is great when played.
I cannot figure out how to improve the sound quality in my 2004 SL500. I recall when I upgraded the speakers in my Monte Carlo and Corvette, I got unbelievable sound.
I would love to replace the speakers in my Mercedes, but none of the custom radio shops in my town will touch my Mercedes. They say it cannot be upgraded.
