the first pic is of the speaker(duh) and i was going to replace it with an aftermarket speaker but i had it tested and it is a 1.5 ohm and its very shallow so no aftermaket speaker will wire up or fit so i guess we are stuck with the stock replacement.
the second pic is of the grill removed and it shows the tabs the need to be pressed down to remove the grill.the easyest way is with a real skinny flat screwdriver or some thing simular and push one tab down and pull the grill up on that side and hold it the press the tab on the other side and it should pop up and toward you.
the third pic shows the grill removed and the speaker hole is at the top.
the red circles show where the tabs are.
hope this helps you guys because i looked on most of the benz forums and could not find any pics or info on how to remove the grill or any info on the speaker.
have any questions just ask. i will also post a link to this in the general section as well as the 211 e class section. oh and the speaker is $130 at the dealer
it seems to have been busted when i got the car a few weeks ago. i had it tested at a local stereo shop and it tested fine and the speaker only does this on some songs with a lot of mids. it distorts like its busted then on some music like the eagles for instance or dance music its fine. i read some where that they changed the part# for that speaker so maybe there is a better replacement.

if you are getting a "buzzing" sound during some musical passages then its most likely the voice coil has separated or deformed...
Shaunis.... thank you so much for posting these pictures.... I've got the same problem with my center channel speaker. I do have one question though. Does the speaker come out in a direct fashion.... or do you have to remove those 4 screws and pull up the entire housing with the vents and pull the speaker from behind it? Just kind of hard to tell from the photo... which looks like the speaker is setting down low. Thanks again Man... you just saved me at least $100 at the dealer....Kick ass...!!!

Duh.... just looked closer at the picture and I think the one you took is after the speaker is already out... so it kind of answers the question... sorry about that.... thanks again for an incredibly helpful post.

The buzzing in the speaker is caused by the speaker being in physical contact with parts of the speaker grille and vent. There is a service bulletin covering this that all dealers should have. The actual speaker is not the problem and the fix requires wrapping the contact areas with a special insulating tape.

Hey N5160,
I don't think what you're saying is really always the case. Sometimes the speaker is actually screwed up. I took the grill off mine today and drove around to see if that cut down on the buzzing.... no beans.... still buzzed at all the same times and with the same music it had before. I've only had this car about 3 months and for having the upgraded sound system I thought it always sounded too "bright"... and like it was missing a ton of midrange. I've had other benzs with the high end Bose systems that totally rocked. Anyway... I started fiddling with the exposed speaker a bit today and noticed it's come completely detached from the frame... I'm picking up a new speaker this weekend... got a relative on the inside at a dealership...LOL. Anyway.. when I get the new one in I'll take some pictures of the damage... and post resulting changes in quality of sound.. if there is a noticeable difference.

Shaunls,
Replace your speaker.... you won't believe the difference in the sound quality. It was almost like getting a new sound system for me. Only took me maybe 10 minute to replace it this weekend. I still don't think the HK systems sound quite as good as the Bose but it's close. I'm going to try and attach a picture of my speaker which was really screwed up. Contrary to another gentleman's post the buzzing wasn't coming form the vent vibration problem..... But talk about a huge ass difference in sound quality. Just amazing. I think I'm going to start saving to add the nav system next.... Thanks again for posting the pictures on how to remove the grill.... couldn't figure that out until I found your post.
Thanks,
z
PS.... Love the wheels on your E500.... look awesome!
