New MB Owner needs iPod Advice

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this forum, but it looks like a very nice, helpful community. I've recently purchased a 2005 C230 with the Harmon Kardon sound system, and after several months of tolerating an FM Transmitter for use with my iPod, I'm looking for other solutions. I've been reading about an MB-installed iPod integration for my HK system, but my dealership estimated an installation cost of upwards near $800 (parts and labor). Am I getting the run-around? I'm having trouble justifying spending that much for a $200 iPod.

Assuming I could get ahold of the parts, would I be able to do the install myself, given that I am someone who is moderately handy and not afraid to scrape a few knuckles? My wife's main concern is that if I tear apart the dash and console trying to get at the necessary cables, I won't be able to put the car back together again in it's former, pristine glory. Can anyone share their experiences in this area?

Do some searching on the forum for the Gateway iPod interface. It has had some excellent reviews, and may provide a better solution than the MB one. I have the MB kit in my ML, and believe it does not transmit the lower frequencies to the head unit (obvious lack of bass), not to mention the moderately clunky interface, which is steering wheel only (no Comand unit capability). Both are going to be about the same price from a parts perspective, I think, but the Gateway looks like a much better deal for that price:

Good luck.

I did take a look at the Denison products. Is there any reference guide to find out which head unit I have installed? I'm pretty sure it's not the Comand unit. That's the GPS/Nav version, right? It's the surround-sound, fiber optic unit, which is either the Audio20/Audio50, correct?
