Is it possible to increase the size of the COMAND hard drive?
I've heard that a special shock-resistant HD is used because of the constant vibration. Does anybody know the brand of the HD or if it's accessible? I was thinking it would be great if I could double or triple the compacity and load my entire music collection on there. Right now it's limited to 4 GB Would it be possible to take out the existing drive and clone it to a new drive with higher capacity?
I guess you have to try to get the first one having some experience on the topic.
My guess is that you would end up having free, inaccessible space. Since the drive would contain navigation data too, cloning may not be straightforward.
Why not use 8.5 GB DL DVD discs and/or a memory card on the PCMCIA slot (didn't W204 have one too). You may still have to swap discs but not often.

you are asking a question on a new platform that nobody has much experience with... but not to worry... I was wondering the exact same thing: I assume you are speaking about the W204 C class... the drive is on the bottom of the radio under a protective cover and i happen to have one sitting in my lab. I will snap some pics on monday of the drive.

Based on the pics. it entirely possible... with two roadblocks possible..
OS or format of the Disc.., and capability of system BIOS.
I would assume that this late in the game no one is using a proprietary drive format, so it should just be either a FAT32 compatible format which means it can be clone on either a mac or PC.. Mac has more options for that...
The exisiting drive is only 8gb. I would try and 80 first if that works try larger is needed. it it does not work, try a 40 then 20..
If neither works,, try another 8 to make sure that the drive can even be cloned.

As I read the label in the lower picture, it is a 30GB drive. Look just below the "8455MB." Possibly it is partitioned to serve the varying functions the drive is used for - most likely it is - but it is a 30 GB drive.
30GB is consistent with what I read in MB's introductory materials concerning the system when it was first introduced.

Unless Toshiba design a larger version then no, there is no suitable alternative equivalent. It doesn't mean that a ruggedised 2.5" drive won't work in its place but it is going to be trial and error.
