I just purchased a 2000 W220 S 320CDI and It has the command system.
Strange thing is that the phone and CD changer are not recognised on the command system.
The build-in phone is not switching on (nokia).
The CD changer is getting power (I can load the CD's), but on the command it says CD changer not connected.
On a MY 2000 E-class, the phone system was D2B connected, if I read right, it is also D2B fibre connected on a MY 2000 W220 also with the fixed phone (but not sure as all early fixed phones were not). Just that Skylaw's comment on the fibre loop could be causing also the phone to fail operation. Looking after the fibre ring sounds a good idea to me.
Thanks for that already
Sounds reaonable to me. I'm not new to car electronics, however I'm new to the fiberoptics part (sounds pritty fancy )
Any poiters on where this fiber optics is running? You are talking about a loop, is this a ring system (like a token ring network) or just cabes running from the devices to the command system?
Any dissasembly guide for the panels/command in the W220?
For my other car (BM*) the nav system is only a TV panel with buttons in the front, the radio, amps etc are actually in the boot, is this also the case with the merc, or is the command system the complete head unit?
See the phone bulletin (which also shows installation of the CD changer) at Phone Bulletins. While there, you might want to browse Paul's site a bit - there is a wealth of information.
Only if you go 3rd party. The MB DVD nav systems are for MOST fiber optics, and are incompatible with your D2B bus fiber optics. You do not want to change busses; you'd have to change out everything attached to it (see the diagram in the phone bulletin) as well as all the cables and harnesses - seat removal, tearing up your car - and you're looking at between $10-15K to do it. It is technically possible, but completely impractical.
And going 3rd party can be expensive too. Often gets into replacing audio amps, etc. A little browsing in this forum will get you some information on it, and some are happy with the change - but it's not an option I would choose for myself.
