New to site. Have just upgraded from my 190E (10 Years of trouble free motoring 209,000 miles!) and purchased a E270 CDI registered 09/2002. After a couple of days i tried to find the CD changer? It doesn't have one! Can any body advise me on any after market models that may be installed?
Has any body installed an aftermarket unit? Is it difficult?
In the U.S. the '02 E-Class used the D2B fiber optics bus, and the CD changer was included on the bus. Although I am not familiar with all aspects of European specification cars, I doubt that they differed in that facet.
Therefore, adding a 3rd party changer would have to be done with additional equipment providing input to the fiber optics bus; it is not a simple or straight "wiring in." If you want a CD changer, your best bet would likely be to buy an original equipment version; if this is the first installation of a CDC, your fiber optics bus will have to be "version coded" to recognize the CDC. If the car had one before before and the CDC was simply removed, version coding would not be required. Version coding is done by the dealer, or a sophisticated independent shop, with the Mercedes STAR diagnostics computer.
I don't know if the U.S. phone bulletin (which, despite the name, also shows installation of the CDC) will help you - even with part numbers, which are likely different - but here it is: http://phdwebsite.powerpulse.cc/Phon...an%2002-01.pdf
If you cannot find a satisfactory CDC solution I suggest that you consider installing the Dension Gateway 500 for D2B, and using an iPod. With sufficient capacity, you can import your CDs in original format (AIFF) into the iPod, and lose virtually nothing in fidelity. You can control the iPod either through your steering wheel buttons, or using the iPod controls themselves. Unfortunately, you will not have display of song titles on your Audio 20, but they will of course show on the iPod. One U.K. dealer is at Dension Gateway 500 | Dension ice>Link Plus Gateway 500 | iPod Car Kit Direct, but of course there are others; and the Dension site itself has the best information. Be sure you're reading about the D2B version, not the MOST version.
Alternatively - I am not familiar enough with your car to know if it has a 3.5mm audio jack (often found under a round plastic cover on the side of the glove box). If it does, it's a matter of adding an inexpensive stereo cable, and controlling things from the iPod. That may be the least expensive solution of all, especially if you already own an iPod.
Good luck.

It would be essential to clarify if this is a W210 or a W211 car. W211 sales started in Europe already before 09/2002 but a W210 may have been registered at what ever date since it was manufactured. Not sure when they started selling W211 in the UK as it would be RHD and those normally appear a bit later.
On a W211, the CD changer fits below the head unit, should be straightforward to install, but an OEM changer should be the only option also in this case.
Sorry said i was new to this! My E270 CDI is one of the first of the new shape W211 sold in the UK. This year was the cross over year in the UK also.
I have found various information on upgrades for the W210 but there does not seem to be any similarity.
Whilst searching around i have noticed a single slot CD Audio 20 which should be a straight swop?? Any body have any idea if this is the case or how much they sell at?

Would need your VIN but I assume your car is equipped with an Audio 20 CC and it would have Audio gateway at the back of the car. Audio 20 CD would have the amplifier integrated but it might still work with the Audio Gateway. Better check because you hardly would want to rewire the speakers from the front.
In any case, a CD changer perhaps would not cost a lot. On a W211 it would be placed behind the door in the front where you now would have a storage bin. Easy to access from there (instead of those at the trunk).
Have the car in at the moment with a Mercedes specialist as the front catalyctic converter has collapsed and forced debris through into the rear catalyctic converter. I thought the loss of power was due to a simple burst turbo hose? Replacement converters and labour in excess of £1000!! Hope the dealer i purchased the car from is going to pick the bill up? as i have only had the car 4 days.
Any way back to the audio, he is going to check out if i have all the fibre optic wiring in place for the CD and the phone prep. To the best of his knowledge all Mercedes from approx 2000 onwards should be fully wired to accept all additional extras. as long as they are OEM i suppose?

Not sure about the UK market but this is definitely not the case for all countries. Even in the US I believe some model years do not have prewiring standard.
The CD changer should anyway be straightforward but the OEM phone kit, if installed as from the factory, could ask for wiring work. Also I assume your car has audio gateway, then it would have fibre to the trunk. The copper wires for the phone kit might still be missing. Hopefully UK cars came prewired.
