Question 2000 S500 CD Changer

Hello,
I recently acquired a 2000 S500 for graduation. The car is loaded with every option and was owned by a close relative. Despite it being garaged kept and pampered, the 6-Disc CD changer was working fine for a week, but suddenly stopped reading the discs. The COMMAND system tells me that the CD Magazine is empty, which it is not. The player itself ejects the mag when I press the button--everything looks like it is in working order. Sometimes, on the display, it says "LOADING CD1," pauses, then does "TRACK," pauses again, DOES NOT go onto any other CD, but rather says MAG EMPTY. I tried removing the two bolts holding the casing of the CD changer in, but when trying to lift it up, it seems that it is attached to the bottom somewhat; I'm afraid of breaking it as a repair exceeds $600. Any helpful suggestions on getting it out? I have a 2001 SLK that I can exchange the player with to test.
Thanks,
Ken

Congrat's on your new wheels and welcome!

I had the same problem a year or two ago and ended up having the dealer replace it w/ a rebuilt unit ($900!). But it is worth it IMO.

On the other hand, I have seen dozens of posts (I think on this board) by those who fixed and/or replaced it themselves (for a whole lot less than I paid). If you search for "CD Changer" I think you will find some helpful stuff.

I would advise you to hold of on that $900 investement
and get an Ipod which will replace you CD changer
you'll have more vesatility and pay nearly half that amount

I'm no expert, but have read in many places on this board that there is no way to integrate an iPod, DVD player, or anything else into our existing systems. Something to do w/ fiber optics, no aux connector, etc.

That's about the same time my CD changer died. I had to replace it. Have your dealer look at it and see what they recommend.
