just picked up a '92 500sl. Radio is stock and has tape but no cd. Sound isn't great and was wondering if there is a way to know if the car has an amplifier or if the speakers are solely run off the head unit. The doors have two speakers each. Does anyone know what the specs are in this system. I guess what I'm asking is replacing the headunit with a high powered one is the quickest and best alternative.
Just sold a '92 300sl, the amplifier is buried in the trunk on the right side. If you decide the amplifier needs service, you will find Becker USA a good service provider. To add a CD changer, you need to find a 10Disc Becker 980 (i believe thats the model number) because no other one will integrate with the head unit. They pop up periodically on ebay.com.
Recommend you consider a subscription to Alldatadiy.com if you're going to keep the car for a while (i don't have stock in the company) you can get about every tech data and repair guide you think of on line.
