Red Book is a standard for 'audio cd's', not 'data cd's'.
Most data discs are written in some permutation of ISO 9660/Joliet/UDF/Rock Ridge/El Torito/ISO 13490...
Another point: Some of the CDROM writing software out there will automatically convert the MP3 file into a CDDA (CD Audio) file and write an 'audio' format disk thus eliminating the benefit of trying to write a pure MP3 disc. Watch for that... Usually writing a 'Data' disc and forcing it to write it as data will work just fine.
I just picked up my brand new CLS
Just to let you know what the latest COMAND does as standard: It's a UK car (i guess you call it Euro spec) 07 CLS, the single slot dash DVD can play MP3s fine with folder support and the in-dash 6 CD changer can also play MP3s but does not support folders - it just puts all the files in one folder which is pretty useless if you have put 4 or 6 albums on a CD
I had a Kenwood AM/FM MP3 player in my previous Mercedes and absolutely loved the capacity and flexiblilty I could get on one MP3 CD. Then I purchased a 2004 S-class and the same MP3 disks I had been listening to completely for years were now either partially playing or in some cases not playing at all in the Comand system!
Thanks for getting me started in the right direction but rather than it being a problem with 'tags' my issue was with all the files I had ripped thru Windows Media and had the .wma extension. Those files would simply not show up. Files that had a .mp3 extension played fine even with the 'tags' attached.
After doing a Google search I found the following tool which converts the 'protected' .wma files to the 'Comand acceptable' .mp3 files. There is a free-trial version but if you have multiple files I would recommend purchase for $19.95 US. You can load your entire digital music database into the software and it will change only the files that need it.
Now the disks I create play completely with no problems! A bit time-consuming to convert your entire library of music but it's better than the frustration of burning a disk and it not play at all or only a few selections are recognized.
MP3s playing flawlessly in CD Changer, "sometimes" not in COMAND drive.
Hi everyone. Tried searching for a solution, but did not find a suitable one, so I have a question...
The vast majority of the time, MP3 files play just fine in our COMAND. Sometimes, specific files will consistently not play properly (i.e. just hear clicks & pops), and yet the very same disc and files play just fine in our CD changer.
Not sure if this is helpful, but the suspect files are usually MP3s of old radio shows, so the files are likely low bitrate mono.
Both the COMAND unit and CD changer have been retrofitted into our vehicle, so I can't take them in and expect warranty service.
Any advice regarding whether it might be an MP3 issue, and not a hardware issue?
(FWIW, we have a 2004 S211. The COMAND came out of a 2006 CLS, and the changer came out of a 2005/6 SLK. The changer has MP3 and WMA compatibility, while the COMAND has MP3 compatibility only...)
Just getting back to your February 16 '07 post, My04230k on FF and RW -- wrote it up elsewhere, but didn't know if you saw it. Try "Seek+" and "Seek-" - same thing, though, you may have to push & hold for FF and RW.

Thanks I figured it out.. killed two birds with 1 stone because it also allows you to change tacks if you have a MFD alarm uncleared.
To be specific, I found that the TmPS warning ( white ) will automatically go away and clear the yellow light if you do not reset it manually. This was a small problem because as long as the warning or any warnong is n the mfd uncleared, you steering control for seek do not work.
So finding out how to do it on the comand was perfect.
I'm still having trouble getting my mp3 DVDs to work properly in a 2007 SL550 US Spec. I have tried every type of DVD, including DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DVD DL. All of the formats read fine in the player, but I get the same problem every time. I can only see about 1 GB worth of music which is roughly half of what I am trying to put on the disc. Arranged in two different ways (described below), I get 235 songs the first way and 264 the second, at about 1GB of data on each.
I tried rearranging the music after reading here that some had issues with the number of folders or tracks. First I arranged the music by artist, but when I burned the disc, only the first 56 folders (total of 235 songs in all the folders) had any mp3s in them. The rest of the folders showed up on the screen, but had nothing inside. I then tried arranging by genre, making 3 main folders and placing the appropriate artist folders inside each. The player read the structure fine, but in the last of the 3 genre folders, only the first 3 artist folders had any music in them. The rest were empty. In this strcture, I got 264 songs total.
So, I started fiddling around with the "project settings" where you can change the file format and the like. I had been using Joliet for everything up to this point, and thought I would try ISO 9660. On ISO 9660, ALL of the music showed up in every folder and played fine. The only problem is that ISO only supports 8 character file and folder names, so it lopped off the end of all the artist names and song titles.
I guess if I have to, I can live with it the way it is now. At least all the music is there. But I sure would like to figure out what the deal is with the Joliet discs only showing the first 1 GB of music. Anyone have any ideas?
I have a 06 slk 350. I recently had my command unit replaced (bad buttons) but now the new one will not play my DVD. It will play standard cd's but not recognize the DVD. It does nothing, not even an error message. In the audio directory it displays the Radio,CDC and Aux, but the CD is grayed out. This does not happen with a regular CD. I spoke with the dealer if they may have put the wrong unit in and they said they are all DVD compatible. Is there a hidden menu to activate it or is it something else
