I am very bummed. My COMAND head unit just suddenly stopped reading discs! I have tried regular audio disc (not burned) and real MBZ NAVI discs (that used to work just fine)
When it is a NAVI disc I get and error that says:
CD-Reading Error: Please use another Navigation CD
When using an audio disc:
CD Drive
Reading Error
The rest of the functions on the head unit seem to work just fine and the Changer (thank goodness) continues to function just fine.
Any ideas? I hope I am not screwed. Is there a way to clean the drive?
Sometimes the cd-rom drive goes bad. It can be replaced. I don't know what that would cost or where it can be done. Possibly a Blaupunkt dealer could do it.
If it SUDDENLY stopped (as you wrote), it is probably not a dirty lens on the laser... when dirty, the reading performance tends to deteriorate over time, with sporadic errors occuring and becoming worse over time. Since yours was working fine and then completely stopped working, it is more likely due to some hardware failure.
A replacement CD-ROM drive may be in order; if the unit does not come back after resting for a while, then it will likely need repair.
If some extreme condition occurred which has caused this (very high temperature, or some excessively dirty environment which may have deposited a lot of residue on the lens), it is possible that waiting for the unit to cool down, or a commercial disc cleaner, will help.
You can do a “System Reset from the “Diagnosis screen in “Service mode. To get to the Diagnosis screen go to the SVC (or SYS on Euro versions) screen and select AUX. Press the “MUT (mute), “1, and “3 buttons all at the same time for about 5 seconds … this will take you to a Service screen. Select “Diagnosis, and then select “System Reset. I will keep my fingers crossed for you but the CD players are known for problems from time to time.
Thanks for the instructions on the systems reset. I completed that and 7! Crapped out... the CD player has the same error messages. I will try a "can o air" and a commercial cleaner but I am thinking they will not help. rats.
ugh, what a drag. anyone have a rough idea on how much to replace the CD drive? it is almost comical to me really.
I had the same problem a few weeks back. I did a system restore and everything went to German. Of course, I couldn't change that because you need to read the language setting from your system disc!
The local MB dealers sent me to a company specialising in Merc and BMW audio equipment. It turns out that the laser assembly on the CD drive was faulty. This job turned out to be about R1000 (US$150) but was fortunately covered by my MB maintenance plan.
