Funny, I've recently been tackling the same issue.
W114's have an issue where the frame will crack around the steering components due to stress. Worst comes to worst this is the problem. Could just need a power steering fluid flush. There are also some plastic bushings in the steering column that need to be replaced eventually, there is a Mercedes dealer service guide on that. Also check suspension components for damage and tire pressures.
It sounds like it is in the upper part of the steering column. I haven't looked at it really good yet but I'm thinking its a bushing somewhere. I am going to check the mounts and stuff when I can.
That's exactly what it's doing. So hopefully that's what it is. It's scary to drive in a hard rain haha.
