Mine has always felt soft and as if you could press it down to the floor boards....

Having the dealer change the pads and bleed the braking system didn't help. Still very soft & mushy. I'm told this is normal and is to help modulate the brakes while off road.

I think I notice it more when I switch between my 996, which has sharp hard brakes, and my wifes ML430 whose brakes in comparison don't inspire confidence.

That's not to say their ineffective and faulty - just different (imho in a bad way).
