I have now had this problem cured, by a very professional nice man called Bruce Wales of Star automotive solutions. He has the right equipment and expertise to cure any sprinter problem and is a very knowledgeable person. Bruce helps people out on this site and you will see some of his hints and tips by searching the threads. His charges are very reasonable and he is far better than a Mercedes dealer, he is not one of these people who buy a cheap diagnostic kit and set themselves up as an expert, he is an expert.
The problem was with the EDC, the terminals were corroded and had to be cleaned, and this was identified by his proper Mercedes software and his expertise. When cleaning or checking the ECU terminals he informed me that the thin ones easily break off due to corrosion and that means a new ECU and you cannot just buy one from a breakers yard, because of the coding and the link with other onboard ECU's.
I cannot sing the praises of Bruce high enough because he knows what he is doing and does not cause you any unnecessary expense.
Try Bruce in the first instance, I do not think you will go anywhere else.
