| Mercedes hiked the asking price of the W140s by substantial amounts over the W126. The asking price for a S600 was almost sixty per cent more than the outgoing W126 560SEL.
Politically incorrect from the moment it arrived the W140 was never popular and DB had problems selling them and ended up having to flog them off at prices well below original list.
Changes to parts and materials in later model year cars was a natural process but also designed to reduce production costs and bolster profit.
Still the peak of quality. Never bettered.
