Well, I think I understand why my oil was so low. When MB quotes the oil capacity as 5 litres, I understood that to mean to the 'full' mark. Finishing the oil change just now, I filled with 5 literes and that only took it to the half way mark of the dip stick. At the last fill I only put in 4.5 litres so that I just barely got back the minimum mark.... likely I was on a bit of a slope so it showed as more. In short, I used a more reasonable 1/2 litre in the 8k km of driving. Oh, by the way, I filled with Castrol 5/40, seems the best weight combination to me.... couldn't find any Mobil 5/40 .... I'm certain they''re pretty much the same for my kind of use
