I think I can inadvertendly shed a bit more light on that. I did an oil change in the fall, about 8k km ago and left the oil level purposely about 1/2 l or even a bit more low thinking that the new engine won't consume any signficant oil..... well, was I in for a suprise. When I checked the oil level yesterday, the oil did not register on the dipstick

I added 1/2 l from a left over bottle which brought the level up exactly to the 'bottom' of the dip stick - ie 1 l low. Soooo, the oil level was 1.5 l down and the warning light did not ever come on. the warning routinely comes on for doors ajar, tire pressures not even, trunk up etc etc
I'm changing oil tomorrow and am torn between 5/30 and 10/40 ..... suggestions anyone? Probably doesn't matter... but it will be hot the next couple of months at least.... That's what I liked about more frequent oil changes... one in the fall and one in spring with 10/40 and 20/50 respectively
