Hey curly 68, I agree the originals suck. I have a basic cd head unit(pioneer) with a set of cheap kenwood coax up where the originals were, a set of phoenix gold 6x9's in the doors and a 12inch soundstream t4 sub inbetween the two seats.

I am very impressed with how it sounds seeing as the coax and 6x9's are only running off the head unit and am going to ditch the sub as the 6x9's supply more than enough bass.
Dont be afraid to get into fitting the 6x9's in the doors as it is not too difficult, you can cut the plastic with a sharp knife and I just made neat little blocks to screw the speaker into behind the plastic, you will be surprised how much room there is behind there. Just be careful when removing the door pannel as it is quite easy to break the plastic clips.
I can try to post some pics of where I mounted mine if you choose to go this route.
