When a driver is coming into the pits at that point they are in tunnel vision. They totally rely on their spotters to guide them that last bit in. It is why you see so many shunts in the pits or folks missing their pits. There is very little control there.

Anyone over the wall is totally responsible for their own safety at that point as the driver has very limited side vision. It is not like when they are on the track and have 50-200 yards to see the protester or tire that wanders onto the track.

While it is not the best of circumstance, what she did was not unusual and happens more than you might expect. It made news because it was her.

Her statement was pretty standard and fair. There really wasn't anything else she could say without going into "he really should have been paying attention" or something like that which would have been unprofessional. Now what she does after the media is gone will most likely be another thing.
