Funny, I heard Joe Scarborough suggest the same thing (minus the 'bitter'). He characterized the success of the GOP as relying on issues of secondary importance (social conservative issues such as abortion, religion and guns) to get people to vote against their economic interest. He went on to suggest that the Dems had no counter for that successful strategy.
Of course, what Obama meant to say was 'bitter and angry small town American clinging to guns and religion'
as campaign issues...
