Here's an older bulletin about starting problems. The 98 and 99s dont show "Start Error" in the instrument cluster, but just flicker the LED when authenticating the key.

Remove starter motor.
Apply a thin coating of grease (part no. 000 989 76 51) to the starter motor ring gear. Use only the grease specified and be sure not to apply too much grease which could adversely affect the signal pick-up of the L5 position sensor (also know as crankshaft position sensor, CPS).

Reinstall starter motor.

For warranty, please use Damage Code 03024 08.
