Beg to differ with you...

The early 1988-1989 M103-12V 300CE had the contrasting cladding.
Contrast color of the cladding depended on the paint color

The coupes never had a narrow rubber strip on the sides at any time...
You may be confusing with the early sedans 1986-1989 which had no cladding, but a black side impact strip.
In fact some of the later coupes had a narrow chrome strip at the top of the cladding.
