Half of your problem happened to me about a month ago. My driver's side door "check strap" made a loud popping noise and decided not to work anymore. Luckily, when it popped off it didn't slam back into the window railing.
Last weekend, I took the door panel off. If you remove the speaker, you may be able to get your hands in there to at least feel around to tell what is actually broke.
I've heard that you can try to straighten the railing, if you can manage that. If not, I've heard you need a whole new door to fix it.
You may want to remove the 3 bolts that connect the check strap to the door. 2 by the door hinge and 1 under the door panel. That's as far as I got, as mine wasn't repairable (it was broke). I'm not sure if I can replace it myself.
