M104 TIMING CHAIN SLAP ...

Hello everyone ! I have a 1993 300e with the 3.2 m104 . if i shut the motor off for more than 1 hour or so and restart it i get what appears to be a timing chain slap . or at least that is what it sounds like . it goes away the second that the oil pressure builds in 1-2 seconds . i run 5w40 royal purple . the car has 155,000 miles and a perfect maintinence record . my theory is that there is a bad check valve in the oiling system causing it to drain out when the engine is shut off . any ideas ? is there a check valve in the oil filter housing ?
