I successfully have a C36 power-train in my 1988 W124 wagon. It's now about 6-years old since the conversion.
If I had to do it over again, I would have sold the 1989 for a 1993-1995 wagon which had HFM from the start. The conversion would have been so much easier.
She's factory perfect, though, even with OBD-II, and a CARB sticker to prove it!
I'm contemplating a M119 into a W124 wagon or 400E/500E turned into W124 wagon.
Converse Engineering in Maine, did a Ford DOHC V8 into a 1988 W124 wagon as well, turnkey I believe is about $15K with car!
Also, I've seen a 1999 twin-turbo diesel into a 1993 S350, so I'm sure if you have a W124 diesel this swap can be done as well (he used the injection pump from the stock W124 diesel, and the existing tranny, so minimal computer work).
