Very likely. The computer would have retarded the timing significantly. So instead of the fuel burning throughout almost the entire downstroke providing power the whole time it is burning just through the later part of the stroke.

Others may have a better suggestion but I would run a bottle of Techron in a tank at least once a month to keep the deposits down.
