That's the first I EVER heard of that! I did MONTHS of research before buying mine and never heard anyone refer to a rod problem. Perhaps you are referring to the 350SDL?
My E300D has performed flawlessly.....delivering me as much as 37 MPG on the highway and 25-27 MPG in town.
I currently have 147,XXX miles on her and have owned several Japanese makes which have clocked in excess of 250,XXX miles, however, I am convinced I will get 500,XXX miles on my E300D. I'll get back to you in about 9 years and let you know if I was successful.
