I am interested in getting a GPS but don't know what to look for. In general, how do they work; what features should I look for; what brand should I look for and avoid? Is it like a GPS tracking system that I have to subscribe and pay for service? What is the price range? Is map updateable every year with a fee? Please enlighten me.

EDIT: Garmin and TomTom apear to be the two most popular brand out there. Garmin nuvi 250 is the cheapest and provide the most basic feature. 250W is nicer with wide screen. I also prefer text to speech feature on the 350 and you don't need to look at the screen while driving. All other features like mp3 player, Live Traffic, FM Transmitter, and Bluetooth aren't important.
