Over-filling the tank can introduce liquid gasoline into the car's fuel vapour recovery system. This in turn can destroy the charcoal canister and other plumbing equipment and purge valves etc. This could cost $$$$

On any modern gasoline car, stop at the first click. Diesels don't have this worry, as they don't need a vapour recovery system.
