If you're walking into the woods or working outdoors, or even need one for your *job*, having a pocket knife is no big deal. There's absolutely no reason for a student to bring any kind of knife with them to school. Show me a school that doesn't have X-ACTO's, or scissors, or whatever they'd need to cut things during any kind of lesson....
I believe he had it in his car. I have a box of some serious tools in my car at times, and my kid has one in his car almost all the time. I am sure there are a few tools in either box that would make the 2.5" Swiss Army Knife blade look like Crocodile Dundee's assailant's knife compared to "This is a knife!" Dundee's. The point being the car is not the same as his pocket, and technically, having a car is likely a lot more dangerous than a knife of any size if he was inclined to try to kill someone. I also have a hard time understanding the logical basis for 2.5" vs. 2.0 inches. Seems to me you either allow Swiss Army knives, or their knock offs, or you don't allow any knives, at all, in anyone's pockets.
