I think you may have inadvertently knocked the manual downshift (left push on the gear lever - up shift the other way). You can do this deliberately too - its the only way to get controllable engine braking on a steep downgrade on this car (or coming up to a stop light).

Not 100% certain as I am not sure of the specs on the UK model. If your car has this - it IS in the huge Merc owners manual (unlike a lot of other things, that are NOT!). Ifhtis is NOT the cause - may need some serious investigation by a mechanic and it could be the tranny! (= transmission, not the usual Brit meaning of this word!)
