| A society needs to take a firm "zero tolerance" for certain crimes. That means that action will result in death or lifetime lockup. Any lesser penalty for such crimes means that you aren't really serious about zero tolerance. The USA and other liberal societies tolerate serious crimes by giving the perpertrators too much of an opportunity to commit the crimes over and over. |
