if you look in the r-class forum there is a thread discussing this issue. you can tap in aftermarket harness but because if the lighting supervisor circuit you are limited by the size/number of bulbs on the trailer: too many and the vehicle will throw bad bulb warnings.
fortunately all MB suvs (ML/GL/R) support a factory wiring harness option. you will need to get the trailer harness kit for the GL and you will also need to have the dealer flash your rear SAM for trailer function.
