Same problem

I have owned my CLS500 now for two years and am running on the second set of tires. At the 35,00 mile mark (20,000 on the current set of tires) I nced extreme wear on the inner tread of the front tires. The wear was extraordinary. The steel belts were actually showing through rubber! There was no indication in the steering wheel to indicate any probelms. The outer tread show little wear but the tread towards the innner side of the tire indicated severe misalligment of the front wheels. There was never any pull when brakinng and the car tracked straight both when braking or not.

Recommendation to all: Carefully whatch the wear on your front tires. Don't repeat my mistake.

we have noticed four CLS`s with 5-8mm across the tread, but wear on the inner sidewall of all tyres. One irrate customers tyre had actually blown out and he was lucky not to have had an accident. I decided to check my own CLS500 and although I had 7-8mm flat across the tread I had the cords of all four tyres showing. I contacted our local mercedes dealer and had the vehicle transported to them at a cost of £188.00.

They very kindly checked said vehicle and informed me that their was no fault with the car in any way. I asked what had cause the tyres to wear on the inner side walls? his reply "I dont know, I am not an expert, sir" I answered I am an expert but I dont know what has caused it. There must be a fault, again "I am not an expert, sir".

The upshot of this mail is to warm all CLS drivers to check the inner edges of all four tyres as they might be in for a nasty suprise. I have sent correspondence to Mercedes Head Office in the UK warning them of this fault and the possibilitys of fatal accidents if they do not alert the owners.
