The 500E was built I believe by Porsche (both Porsche and Merc are based in Stutgart.
AMG used to be an indipendant tuner. They were bought by Merc as an antagonist to BMW M power.
The first part official result of this buy out was the European W124 sportline's that were fitted with their suspension, seats and steering at AMG's factory.
This was prior to the W124 320E AMG. that was a bored out 300E-24v M104.
I don;t have any of the above for sure but its what I've heard.
