If we weren't playing in their backyard, they wouldn't care any more about us than we do about them. We have a long and sordid history of interfering with foreign governments and cultures. It has, with damned few exceptions, always come back to kick us in the ass -- hard. All you have to do is study the origins of Al Qaeda and Bin Laden to understand their motivations. It has never been a secret. Is that a suggestion that we somehow invited the attack? Absolutely not. It is a suggestion that our foreign policy in the region has been and continues to be provocative.
