I wish I could help with more specific information - the early 90s were pretty chaotic at AMG, all kinds of rumors going around, lots of secrecy about the MB deal - we were the last ones to know what was going on, usually read about it in the paper or in car magazines.
I looked through some of my old brochures, AMG still had their own price list for modifications in 1990 (published 06/90); the earliest date I found on the MB brochures is 08/91. I know that at some point Mercedes started sending us modified VIN plates for the cars that were sold through their dealers - same VIN, but different weight ratings etc. Also the tire pressure stickers were modified, and stickers added to the owner's manual.
So unless you can verify your car's MB-AMG heritage through the VIN, there is no way to know for sure if it was sold as an AMG car through MB or modified for an individual owner. Most of the cars that were modified in Affalterbach back then came brand new from the factory anyway, so IMHO there is not a huge difference.
BTW where can I find this Russian VIN decoder?
