| Hi again..
The car is still in the shop being assessed. I think I took it to the right place, it's currently parked between part restored XK120 Jag and a ground up restored convertible Mustang, just around the corner from a gorgeous Morgan... :-)
The damage isn't as bad as the photos look at first glance - I did choose the most dramatic pics for the original posting and with the discussions I have had with the resto shop, they are pretty sure it is very repairable. It may need a full new panel for the back corner to retain the full crumple zone, but we will see.
One of the ideas for the SLC was to go rallying with it as a replica of the old 5.0 cars anyway - maybe this will force me into putting a rollcage into it and finally getting the project underway... :-) Trouble is, the same project includes an engine transplant and conversion to manual gearbox.
But, I can think of much worse things to do with the beast!
I will post photos of the repairs once it all gets done.
And in answer the earlier post, yes it is Astral Silber - well a modern DuPont laquer version of the same colour anyway. The genuine Glasurit paint was apparently nowhere near as good as the new paints and has aparently been discontinued anyway. The inside word is that even though the paint shop will tell you they are giving you the original G735 paint, they will be using new paints anyway. The SLC isn't a concours car, so I wasn't worried about absolute historic correctness anyway.
My neck was only stiff for a couple of days and the bruises are pretty much gone.
I'm just dying to get the car back on the road so that I can go for a drive! Luckily, I have a work car that has been getting me around, but it is quite a bit different - a smart Fortwo. Probably about as different as I could get really.. It's a heap of fun to drive, but the 'Benz just has the special old school feel that the little smart lacks. |
