I think that the construction of the car is very solid (it weighs ~3700 pounds). I have a factory video clip of the "crumple zones" in a 107 and it's pretty impressive, considering that the car was designed in the late 60's/early 70's. The US bumpers are incredibly strong - I know, I had one straightened out a little bit and it took an enormous industrial press beyond what you would see in a body shop to move the aluminum(!) bumper 1/16" or so.

Interesting that you are one of the only people I've seen concerned about safety in a 107. I considered buying a 1968 Camaro like I had when I was a kid before buying the 560SL, but after doing a little research, I would never buy any pre-1970 car (except maybe an MB) as a daily driver. The accident described above would probably have resulted in a permanently crippled or dead person in a pre-1970 car, with no side beams in the doors.

There is also a video somewhere on the Internet of a 107 rolling over on the Autobahn - the hardtop didn't come off and the person was OK.
