Replacing center dash bulbs

Any thoughts on replacing burned-out instrument dash bulbs? Can only find info on speedometer dash replacement.

I took my 1991 420SEL to my garage to have the map light (only, not big interior light) and center cluster lights replaced (the lights for the temp wheel, air direction and fan adjuster buttons).

They said that the housing had melted and the entire cluster would have to be replaced, not just those lights. Big $!

What gives? Suspect the original owner used too powerful replacement bulbs...

Any way to diy or is this a major deal I should learn to live with?
