Missed this question when it was posted...There is no procedure for a '96 or newer car for reading diagnostics, because it requires a very expensive scan tool. In this case I would access the top controller behind the seats, remove the main electrical connector, and then following the schematic for the top control system I would check the state of the inputs from the latches and determine which one was incorrect.

I've never owned a '94-'95 Mercedes and just realized that the diagnostics for the top controller that can be obtained with an LED on these years are not nearly as comprehensive as for the earlier years. There are just 10 diagnostic codes instead of 29.
The "7" means that the top is not latched properly at the windshield or the fabric bow is not latched down at the rear. That could be any one of 4 switches -- an older car would identify the specific switch.
The "1" indicates that no fault codes are stored in the controller.
