| RE: Vaccuum Hoses to Distributor 1980 450SLC The hose towards the rear is vacuum advance. It serves a useful function. The one on the other side of the advance can, closest to the radiator, is vacuum retard -- this one is for emissions purposes. If it happens to get disconnected and plugged, no one except an smog testing station will care.
Ignition timing is also set for emissions -- it's amazing the darn thing will even run at the factory setting. These cars respond quite well to additional intial timing advance.
