| RE: 20 " rims
It depends on the wheel size. All of the wheels should be identical, otherwise it will screw up ETS/ESP (read: no staggered rims on AWD vehicles).
According to Luke @ TireRack the following are valid wheel sizes for the ML (18"+ rims):
285/50-18T 29.2
285/55-18 30.3
285/45-19 29.1
265/50-20 30.4
295/40-20 29.2

I'm not sure about the theory that one should plus size the brakes when they plus size the rims. Granted bigger rims are often heavier and move the mass out to the edge (more angular momentum), but I would imagine that most manufacturers compensate for this. The trick to brakes is that if you can get ABS to kick in rotor size isn't the limiting factor - road traction is. With my 20" rims on it's a lot harder to do thanks to the 295mm width but I still can. It's also important to note that the ML55 has the same brakes as the ML 430/500 and runs 285/55-18 stock.
I also haven't had much of a problem with the wheels tracking the groove in the road, but maybe I'm just used to it or the ML55 beefier sway bars help.
