RE: Battery discharging

In an R129 SL it is entirely normal to get a considerable spark when you connect the battery. It is due to the soft top controller which draws about 400mA of current for periods of time.

If you think you have a problem, I suggest getting a basic voltmeter from Sears or Radio Shack and checking the current draw. When the car is turned-off with the key removed, you should get roughly 400-450ma of current draw for approximately 1 hour. After that the soft top controller should quit energizing the seat belt release solenoids and cause the draw to fall to around 30ma where it remains until the key is turned-on again.
