Broken antenna mast. Any replacement tips?

Hi all. The original antenna was "accidentally" snapped when backing into our garage by my Dad. We had ordered a replacement from Hirschmann through Precision Auto Parts, but unfortunately it was not compatible. I am guessing it was meant to use used on Sedans and Coupes. So we bit the bullet and bought a brand new mast from Mercedes. Our local dealer offered to put it in for free, but when my Dad came back with the car, even when the antenna was in the off position, it was still raised somewhat! It telescopes to the max position with the switch, and will lower as much as it can when switched off. But for some reason it will not retract all the way. My Dad said that the tech said to get it to go all the way down he would have to take apart the drive box which could get very costly if he couldn't put it back together properly!? I feel this is unacceptable to have the antenna collecting dirt everytime the car is driven. Eventually I am going to snap it just by brushing by the car! Have any of you had this problem before? Here is a pic of the antenna in the "off" position:
